came across this passage on FRIENDSHIP....

Friendship is one of the most important parts of a young person’s life. Most every young person spends a great deal of time with companions: going to movies, roller-blading, playing sports, swimming, and listening to music.

In school, students quickly group themselves into friends at the beginning of each year. Since young people invest themselves so much in their friendships, they should be required in school to reflect upon the nature of these important associations.

First, the teacher should ask young people to define a friend. Most likely the students will say that a friend is someone you like to be with, or to hang out with, or someone who has the same interests as you. The more thoughtful students will say that a friend is someone you can count on.

Then the question becomes whether a friend is a good person and whether friendship is a good thing. The students will answer universally "yes." So, then, can bank robbers be friends? Here the question gets a little tricky.

If they say yes, then we must ask whether bank robbers can be good people and remind the students that we said friends are good people. If the students say no, then we have to figure out the flaw in our logic from the beginning. (Realize that bank robbers hang out together, have the same interests, and rely on each other. Yet bank robbers are not good.)

A real friend is someone who knows when you're sad without you having to tell him...

someone who will then give you a pep talk, take you out to play video games, and agree to take a whole bunch of stupid pictures that he'll later regret, all in the name of seeing you smile again.

Someone who will walk miles with you on the beach and pick up a whole bunch of heavy seashells, that he later ends up carrying back.

Someone who will listen to country music (albeit with some grumbling) because you happen to like it.

Someone who will help you compose important mail to an ex. Someone who will do all kinds of silly stuff to entertain you.

The truest friend of all is one that reads your very soul... one that has been through your childhood with you and still loves you anyway.

One that has watched you make numerous stupid adult decisions, been there to pick up the pieces, without making any judgments, and still loves you anyway.

One that always knows what you are thinking and how you are feeling without you ever having to tell her.

One that's always willing to talk, no matter what the hour. One that knows when you need company and when you need to be alone.

One that can sit with you in comfortable silence.

The best friend of all always knows what's in your heart, and she acts on that...she knows what you miss, what you long for, then manages to give it to you in one simple, heartfelt gesture...

one that can bring you an entire season wrapped in a box full of colored leaves, pinecones, acorns, and quartz.

That's a gift from the heart; that is someone who can read your soul. That's something very rare, and quite irreplaceable, indeed.
